The Institute of Structure of Matter of the Italian National Council of Research (ISM-CNR) was founded in the early ‘80s and has a long tradition in material characterization ranging from laboratory based research to large scale facilities such as synchrotrons and neutron sources. The expertise of the Institute next extended to material synthesis and deposition capabilities as well as prototype fabrication to exploit novel materials at the application level. These investigations take advantage of a thorough theoretical expertise based on multiscale descriptions. ISM has four sites in Italy, two located in Rome, one in Trieste and one in Potenza. It comprises ca. 70 staff scientists and develops research at the interface between physics, chemistry, biology and engineering. The Institute publishes >100 scientific publications per year.
